Abstract
Eri-culture is practiced and proved economically beneficial to the tribals and other weaker section of the society in North-Eastern states of India. Recently the eri-culture has also spread to other parts of India like Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Maharashtra is one of the Non-traditional states for sericulture. However, recently some of the trials were undertaken to prove success of the ericulture in some parts of the Maharashtra. Eri silkworm is polyphagus, in present study some castor varieties which are popular among the farmers for commercial castor seed production were chosen to feed castor silkworm Samia cynthia riciniBoisduval. The varieties including GCH3, GCH6, AKC-1, Girija, GCH-4, GCH-5 (Ricinus communis L.) were used for feeding the silkworms. Rearing was conducted under controlled conditions in laboratory at 25o C±2 and RH 70 to 75 percent. Study was undertaken to know which variety is more suitable for promoting commercial ericulture. It was noticed that GCH 4 variety found more suitable as compared to the other varieties with respect to ERR, single cocoon weight, shell weight percentage, pupal weight, fecundity by 20 percent. The present study would be beneficial for popularization and commercialization of ericulture for castor growers of the state.
