Better starting performance of the hermetic compressor has become one of the primary development targets due to variation in operating pressures of refrigerants. Reciprocating mechanism subjected to pressure transients in suction and discharge lines and critical conditions occurred during on-off cycling which imposes greater forces on piston this causes requirement of high starting torque. For reducing torque demand and improving starting ability, various methods were studied but offset cylinder method is implemented which reduces torque demand due to the reduction of forces on the crank by reducing the angularity of connecting rod. The paper deals with the evaluation of torque demand for better operation of compressor and Excel program have been successfully developed for the same. Experimental validation of mathematical results was done on offset cylinder type compressor prototype to
overcome startability issues also effect of some refrigerants on torque requirement is discussed
