Abstract

Microstructure of concrete plays most significant role in strength and durability of structure under normal circumstances and during fire exposure. When concrete is exposed to higher temperatures, it undergoes several microstructural changes that affects its durability and strength. The fire resistance of concrete depends on type of aggregate used, porosity, size of structural member etc. This paper discusses in detail the influence of these factors on concrete at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, influence of vermiculite on the fire resistance properties has been discussed.
