Abstract

A comparison of Finite element based solution using ANSYS is made for a sandwich beam with the classical theory. Two different loading conditions are applied on the beam and the results are compared simultaneously with the FEM based solution and the classical theory. It has been shown that the concentrated load shows higher deviation in the classical theory with the FEM based solution. Sandwich beams offer high stiffness with light weight; however the impact load or localized loading provides an important challenge of analyzing the localized stress concentrations. It is proved that the localized stresses due to concentrated load need to be analyzed more rigorously and that the core stresses cannot be neglected for localized loading.
