Abstract

Soil Stabilization is a process which alters the physical properties of soil in order to improve its strength, bearing capacity, durability, or other qualities to meet the engineering requirements. It can be achieved by either controlled compaction, or by addition of suitable admixtures like cement, lime, etc. The cost of adding these admixtures is increasing tremendously; hence there is a need to develop other means of soil stabilisation techniques by using alternative waste materials like plastic, bamboo, fibres, etc. This new technique of soil stabilization can also be effectively used to meet the challenges of society, and to reduce the quantities of waste disposal. Use of plastic products like polyethylene bags, bottles, etc. is escalating alarmingly on daily basis, leading to various environmental related problems. Thus, using plastic as a soil stabilizer can prove economical in utilization for embankments. Since the stability of any pavement depends upon the stability of subgrade soil because it oversee the structural performance, life span, and effectiveness of the pavement. The entire load coming on the pavement is ultimately borne by the subgrade. Hence, the subgrade plays a very important role in pavement design. This study is carried out to examine the productive use of plastic waste in subgrade soil. Using plastic waste in stabilization of murum soil may help in reducing the risk of environmental problems. In India, the major problem is the availability of waste disposal sites. By using the plastic waste in soil stabilization, we will try to enhance the CBR value of murum soil and at the same time reduce environmental pollution.
