Abstract

Aggregate in concrete is a structural filler, however its role is more important than what that simple statement implies. Aggregate occupies the most volume of the concrete. Aggregate is the stuff that the cement paste coats and binds together. The shape, composition and size of the aggregate all have significant impact on the workability, durability, shrinkage, weight and strength of the concrete. Aggregate can even influence the appearance of the cast surface, which is an especially important consideration in concrete countertop mixes. In order to get good durable concrete in this investigation we concentrated on the aggregate replacement. Here coarse aggregate of 20mm is partially replaced at various percentages (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) by 12mm, 6mm aggregate to fill the voids in concrete. The fine aggregate (Natural sand) is completely replaced by manufacture sand (M-sand) to protect the environment and also to fulfill the adequate requirement of fine aggregate. The experiments were conducted on M 20 design mix concrete of 1: 2.288: 4.039 proportions. Durability study on acid attack was studied and percentage of Strength loss is compared with normal concrete. Test results indicate that use of M-sand and different sizes of coarse aggregate in concrete have improved the performance of concrete in strength as well as in durability aspect.
