Abstract

About two-third world is covered by water. From the early times transportation by water has been the most common mode as it can carries large volume of cargo and of course it is cheapest mode of transport. For the safe and convenient loading and unloading of the cargo ports and harbour were built. And to maintain tranquillity in the basin area of the port some shelter was needed in form of natural construction or say artificial, which we call a Breakwater. There are many types of breakwater wherein floating type breakwater is an option. Floating breakwater is effective in reducing the thrust of the waves. In this paper we shall try to study different type of floating breakwater and try to understand the appropriate type of breakwater as per the site condition.
