Kinematic Design and Analysis of an Innovative Elliptical Exerciser with Quick-Return Mechanism

Fu-Chen Chen , Yih-Fong Tzeng, Wei-Ren Chen · Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kun Shan University, Tainan, Taiwan, Taiwan

🕔 Received 22 December 2023; received in revised form 2 April 2024; accepted 10 April 2024

Research Article Mechanical Engineering Mechanism Design & Kinematics Pg. 32-44
Abstract The objective of this study is to propose and investigate an innovative elliptical exerciser with quick-return effect that mimics the timing of the foot trajectory while jogging. At first, the innovative mechanism of the elliptical exerciser with quick-return effect is proposed. The structure and function of the proposed design are introduced. Then, the mechanism is analysed kinematically using the vector-loop method and motion geometry of the mechanism. An illustration is presented for explaining the design procedure of the proposed innovative design. Finally, the pedal trajectory of the innovative elliptical exerciser is simulated. The simulation results validate that the motion of pedal trajectory on the striding travel is faster than that on the supporting travel. Because of this quick-return effect, the timing of the pedal trajectory meets the principles of ergonomics and prevents the user suffering frommuscle sore, pain or even injury.

Intelligent Prediction of Concrete Compressive Strength Using Artificial Neural Networks

Jose Manuel Palomino Ojeda , Stefano Rosario Bocanegra, Lenin Quiñones Huatangari · Data Science Institute, National University of Jaen, Jaen, Peru, Peru

🕔 Received 10 February 2024; received in revised form 16 May 2024; accepted 17 May 2024

Research Article Civil Engineering Structural Engineering & AI Applications Pg. 45-61
Abstract The objective of the work is to estimate the compressive strength of concrete by means of the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). A database is created with design variables of mixtures of 175, 210, and 280 kgf/cm², which are collected from certified laboratories of soil mechanics and concrete of the city of Jaen. In addition, Weka software is used for the selection of the variables and Matlab software is used for the learning, training, and validation stages of ANNs. Five ANNs are proposed to estimate the compressive strength of concrete at 7th, 14th, and 28th day. The results show that the networks obtain the average error of 4.69% and are composed of an input layer with eleven neurons, two hidden layers with nine neurons each, and the compressive strength of concrete as the output. This method is effective and valid for estimating the compressive strength of concrete as a non-destructive alternative for quality control in the construction industry.

A Semantic Data Integration Approach for Wireless Sensor Networks in Environmental Monitoring Systems

Ubaidillah Umar , M. Udin Harun Al Rasyid, Sritrusta Sukaridhoto · Electronics Engineering Polytechnic Institute of Surabaya, Indonesia, Indonesia

🕔 Received 21 March 2024; received in revised form 01 June2024; accepted 05 June 2024

Research Article Computer Science Internet of Things & Semantic Web Pg. 79-95
Abstract A wireless sensor network (WSN) works continuously to gather information from sensors that generate large volumes of data to be handled and processed by applications. Current efforts in sensor networks focus more on networking and development services for a variety of applications and less on processing and integrating data from heterogeneous sensors. There is an increased need for information to become shareable across different sensors, database platforms, and applications that are not easily implemented in traditional database systems. To solve the issue of these large amounts of data from different servers and database platforms (including sensor data), a semantic sensor web service platform is needed to enable a machine to extract meaningful information from the sensor‘s raw data. This additionally helps to minimize and simplify data processing and to deduce new information from existing data. This paper implements a semantic web data platform (SWDP) to manage the distribution of data sensors based on the semantic database system. SWDP uses sensors for temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, luminosity, and noise. The system uses the Sesame semantic web database for data processing and a WSN to distribute, minimize, and simplify information processing. The sensor nodes are distributed in different places to collect sensor data. The SWDP generates context information in the form of a resource description framework. The experiment results demonstrate that the SWDP is more efficient than the traditional database system in terms of memory usage and processing time.

Ant Lion Optimization-Based Design of a Micromachined Sierpinski Carpet Fractal Antenna

Ashish Kumar , Amar Partap Singh Pharwaha · Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Sangrur, Punjab, India, India

🕔 Received 10 February 2024; received in revised form 2 July 2024; accepted 10 July 2024

Research Article Mechanical Engineering Ultrasonic & Acoustic Engineering Pg. 96-109
Abstract Near-surface defects are one of the most common types of damage occurring in polymer composite materials. Conventional Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, especially ultrasonic testing, are not always suitable for detecting these types of defect, especially in thin plates. The proposed NDT method in this article employs Low Acoustic Impedance (LAI) characterization. The novelty of LAI technique lies in the transverse resonating of Lead-Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) transducer which shows significant lower effective acoustic impedance compared to thickness - extension mode. The LAI technique eliminates the need for the matching layers and reduces the manufacturing cost consequently. Briefly, the analytical model has been introduced and the fabrication procedure has been discussed in detail. The setup has been evaluated both numerically and experimentally to detect a debonding. The results proved the ability of LAI technique in the detection of defects and, moreover, the approximate geometry of the affected region as well.
